MASON TOPPED THE LIST AT NUMBER ONE!
"Do you ever wish life could slow down sometimes? Do you ever wish you could stop and enjoy the simple things in life more often?"
"Originally a stronghold against Native American troops, Mason was officially incorporated in 1858. Today, it has a population of about 2000 and a rich culture that can only be found in West Texas.
Between rock climbing, antiquing, the oldest movie theater within hundreds of miles, and natural topaz that can't be found anywhere else in Texas, Mason sure packs a punch for being such a tiny town."
Comanche Creek
Comanche Creek rises a half mile southwest of Mason Mountain and runs southeast for twenty miles, to its mouth on the Llano River.
In the mid-1850s, Comanche Indians often lay in ambush for the stagecoaches in the hills along the stream; hence the creek's name.
When Fort Mason was built in 1851, the creek supplied the fort with water. By 1928, however, it had become a generally dry watercourse with a sandy bottom.
The Eastern and Western branches of Comanche Creek run through the Lindsay Ranch and this is where most of the topaz has been found.
