On the Lindsay Ranch, most of the topaz has been found in or around Comanche Creek which was named for those "Lords of the Plains" who passed through Mason County each year on their Spring raids.
A geologist, from the University of Texas, said that he found a greater variety of minerals on the Lindsay Ranch than anywhere he had been.
Minerals on the ranch include limestone, granite, tourmaline, sandstone, quartz, garnet, schist and some that no one has been able to identify.
Petrified wood, petrified bone, fossils, arrowheads, hand axes and other artifacts have also been found.
Mason County is the only place in Texas where topaz is found.
Mason County is part of the Llano Uplife and our old rocks have been pushed to the top.
Topaz was designated the Texas state gem in 1969 and the Lone Star cut was designated the state cut in 1979.
